Sella Turcica (Review)

Sella Turcica

Sella Turcica (2010)

Directed by Fred Vogel

"Then of course, came the war in Viet Nam, which has only been over for about sixteen or seventeen years, and thanks to the lies and deceits surrounding that war, I guess it's no surprise that the very same condition was called post-traumatic stress disorder. Still eight syllables, but we've added a hyphen! And the pain is completely buried under jargon. Post-traumatic stress disorder. I'll bet you if we'd of still been calling it shell shock, some of those Viet Nam veterans might have gotten the attention they needed at the time. I'll betcha."

-George Carlin

The words from George Carlin still ring true today. I've seen some HBO docs about post traumatic stress disorder and the soldiers who come back are never the same. But they're not as bad as Brad Roback, our main protogaonist in Sella Turcica, Toe Tag's latest film. Fred Vogel and his crew are of course responsible for the infamous August Underground trilogy, but gorehounds should delight they are evolving into more linear films with vibrant characters and a story driven films.

Their other flick, The Redsin Tower is supernatural with gory overtones but here they blend the best of both worlds making us actually CARE about these characters while supplying us with the awesome splatter effects they are known for.

Sella Turcica takes the cliched overused soldier's homecoming story and adds a horror element that redefines trauma in a whole new way. This is the evolution of Toe Tag we are seeing and I like where they are going. It may take a while to get going but somehow I have to admit I was liking each of the characters. They reminded me of a friend's hometown, each of the people resembling real people, not the cardboard MTV cutouts we always see in horror movies.

It's an uneasy feeling to go from Lifetime movie of the week to gorehound delight in a span of 100 or so minutes. But that's what happens in Sella Turcica and while we all know it won't end well, you know your going to be shell shocked instead of post traumatized.

Boring Plot-O-Matic

Sgt. Bradley Roback (Damien A. Maruscak) returns home from active duty after a mysterious accident leaves him paralyzed. Awaiting his return, his mother, Karmen (Camille Keaton), and younger sister, Ashley (Jade Risser), remain unaware of the details of the accident and severity of Brad‘s condition. Once he arrives, though he looks sickly, his family members are pleased to see him alive and don’t bring attention to his ill appearance. Over the next twenty-six hours Brad’s condition terribly worsens, barreling down to a gruesome conclusion that will change the family forever.

Awesome Review-O-Matic

The cast may not look like that average American family you see in movies but they show a realness of the probable American family. Backyard wrestlers, tatoo artists, single parenthood are clearly written from what we know and not from what we see. Our characters are all likeable and some are designed to be annoying as hell. So whose who to meet our war hero Brad?
  • Our mom, our single parent who tries to keep the family together
  • Ashley, Brad's sister a dance student who cares deeply for her war torn bro
  • Bruce, Brad's bro a tattoo artist with a wife and kid of his own
  • Gavyn, Ashley's BF and aspiring DJ
  • We meet Bruce's wife and a few friends as minors as well
Everybody expresses concern for Brad (he looks eerily messed up, white as a ghost with veiny splotches) and he recounts a few war stories with one concerning a monkey which seemed eerie. It's the drawn out pacing that could get irritating for some but I found each of the characters oddly mesmerizing. Ashley gives an impromptu dance and bro's share beers. The conversations are clearly emphasizing character development. I began to like Ashley and mom and Bruce but hated annoying Gavyn (as it was probably designed for the viewer)

As the movie progresses Brad falls apart ala the Brundle in The Fly. Bleeding ears, oozing from every orifice and he loses taste for all food. It's a slow deterioration and the effects are to be applauded. If there is one thing you can count on with Toe Tag it's the non CGI effects and makeup.

This leads to a frenzy conclusion where Brad descends into an infected zombie monster and starts your kills. And the kills are fuckin top notch. Beheadings, ripped mouths and a poor dog are on display for you gore addicted cinephiles. Buckets of blood are on display and carnage to the max and when it did, I was chanting "Toe Tag! Toe Tag!" in my head.

It's clear Vogel and his team are making a statement about the effects of war on our soldiers. We get different POV about pro and anti war and the psychological effects of seeing human fatalities on a large scale. The government is painted as a vague evil which hints on an explanation but I found it not necessary.

Watching Sella Turcia (which is a less know medical condition consisting of tumors from the pituitary gland) your watching the heavy toll of war. Damien Maruscak does a great job as Brad and his recounting of war stories makes you feel like you were there. Some soldiers come home with physical trauma which is a hardship in itself. But the mental trauma is clearly more horrible it seems. Sella Turcica explores both and then amplifies the physical with an ending that will give you the heebeejeebees.

My few gripes about the film is that at times it delves into film fodder. Some conversations could have been clearly removed and some were too much character development. Gavyn is the token black guy and comes off as the only asshole though he says what's on most of our minds. I also would have intercut Brad falling apart earlier for some suspense. But those are only a few snags for a film that was made for about $20k.

It's one of the top 20 movies I've seen this year. It may not be as infamous as Toe Tag's previous, but it may probably be the best all around flick they've ever put out.

Gore-ipedia

Dog trauma
Fulci inspired trauma
Beheading
Ripped throats

Nude-ipedia

A tastefully done sex scene (umm what the hell was that Toe Tag?)

WTF moment

Brad's head says hi

The Jaded Viewer's Final Prognosis

If your a fan of Toe Tag, you need to see probably their best coherent film to date. It hits on all cylinders from characters, to plot, to gore effects and to theme. I'm looking forward to what they do next and as an indie horror fan, you should to.

Sella Turcica (Trailer)

I sometimes lose track of my list of studios and directors that I dig. In the case of Toe Tag Pictures, I've been trying to keep up to date with their latest and greatest. I last checked in when the trailer for Murder Collection Volume 1 was released. But they've released a few new movies of late including Maskhead.

I actually own Redsin Tower and August Underground Mordum (a signed copy via a purchase from Fred Vogel himself). Back in the day, I would explore the vendors and the Toe Tag crew were always a must visit.

For you noobs, Toe Tag gave birth to the August Underground flicks which have cemented themselves on hundreds of "disturbing horror movie" lists. But they have been evolving from heavy FX features to story driven flicks. That's not to say they leave out the gore and splatter out. Their expertise and believable effects are what makes them one of the best horror companies out there.

So with that, I realized a new trailer was released for their newest feature entitled Sella Turcica. Here be the plot.

Now check out the trailer.

It's been getting high praise among the horror community. They are calling it the best Toe Tag flick to date.

Murder Collection Volume 1 (Trailer)

The guys from Toe Tag Pictures are back. Fred Vogel, the sick mastermind that brought us the August Underground trilogy (I'm ashamed to admit this but I've seen all 3) are back with a new flick filled with fake snuff, mock executions and "real footage" of deathiness.

Well this has got to be 10 years too late don't ya think?

Sorta like Faces of Death with some Mondo Cane-ness, from the reviews I've read, the kills look mega realistic. This is of course the slice and dice expertise from Toe Tag.

The plot is below.

The film revives an early 1990’s Internet clip show, Murder, which was notorious for streaming videos of actual killings. After gaining popularity, the infamous show was discovered by authorities and shut down forcing the host, Balan, into obscurity.

Over more than a decade in the shadows, the obsessed host continued to search for scenes of brutality that provoke a maelstrom of emotion. Balan has recently emerged from the darkness and is eager to show you his collection.

I met Vogel once during a Chiller convention and bought August Underground Mordum (a signed copy!) and he was rather chill as we talked about horror shit. Good times.

Check out the trailer below.

I also have watched their most recent non snuff movie Redsin Tower which was pretty horroficly adequate. But I'm glad their back to their old sicko, twisted shenanigans.

I'll probably have to order this pretty soon. Only sick bastards need apply.

Amateur Porn Star Killer (Trailers)

The jaded viewer has always tried to introduce flicks you've never heard of. We've dug up movies from the bowels of underground horror.

The snuff sub genre is on the fringe on the edge of sicko-core.

Movies in this category are slim.

Fred Vogel's August Underground comes to mind first. The Guinea Pig "Devil's Experiment" is another.

But a new kid is on the block.

Shane Ryan's Amateur Porn Star Killer and its just released sequel are now the new disturbing fucked up flicks that have added their names to the fringiest of the fringe.

Rewind the Insanity:

OK. It's pseudo snuff. But with porn.

I haven't seen this shit myself, but many have and from the bytes in the trailer they are all now viewers who have been mentally disturbed.

Pseudo snuff flicks are never any good. They make you sick, dirty and disturb the FRAK out of you, but are not actually good movies.

But alas, you watch because if these movies make a mental horror impact, the director's done their job.

So be aghast and watch the trailers.

Review of the Day: Captivity

You really have to think twice when you decide to watch a horror movie where the lead actress is soooo hot you'll see her in anything. Of course you'd like to see her naked, covered in blood or screaming in pain. Or doing something sexually deviant or psychotic or violent.

But if you do watch a movie because of this reason, you have a severe case of "Dark Angel Syndrome".

(Dark Angel Syndrome: Watching any particular form of entertainment (movie, tv show, etc.) because the hotness of lead actress outweighs the horrible plot, bad acting and totally shitty experience of the show. )

Well I've got a severe case of DAS because I watched both Captivity and Rise: Blood Hunter (which I'll review this week) back to back. And all I know is my head is spinning from the after effects of seeing these turds.

So on to the review!

Captivity
Captivity (2007)
Directed by Roland Joffe

Elisha Cuthbert is freakin hot. Her blondness. Her full figuredness. Her voloptuousness. Her breastedness. Her blue eyes-ness. Her Canadianess. Super hot.

OK now that I got that out of my system.

Regurgitated plot is about a super model and stranger are abducted by an unknown serial killer and are held captive where sadistic games are played on the both of them.

Of course its rippin off Saw but Saw didn't have a hot actress screaming in every scene and crying in pain for almost the entire movie (hmm actually all the Saw movies did...never mind).

Torture-core has been secretly embedding its way into mainstream horror but its 15 minutes are up. But that's not to say that the sub sub genre doesn't have merit. Captivity was utter garbage. Cuthbert's overacting, the lack of tortureific devices was non existent and the twist ending was sooo predictable a 3rd grader could have figured it out.

Of course I watched recut edition that seems devoid of any gore or torture. But it would have all been the same anyway.

Cuthbert is waaay hot but no way does it save the movie.

If you want to watch torture-core in its finest and purest form, you need only see a few movies on a short short (midget-ish) list.

August Underground (Original, Mordum and Penance) and Murder Set Pieces.

All of them are sadistic, sick and twisted. Worst than Saw, worst than anything known on the planet. And thoughts spew out just thinking of the sick shit that's in these torture-core masterpieces. (I'll share them on a later date)

But if you need your Elisha fix and need to see a innocent woman tortured, then Captivity is your bag.

I mean look at her: How could I not suffer DAS on this.
